Anxious and depressed states of mind can be overwhelming experiences. We suffer. During this day we will examine how to relate to these challenging mood states with the support of mindfulness practice as well as the latest neuroscience research. As the essence of mindfulness-based practice can best be understood through our own experience, the day will include guided mindfulness meditations, along with didactic and experiential components with an emphasis on investigating ourselves and mind/body habit patterns which may contribute to suffering. We will examine how to best take care of ourselves with compassion with a focus on cultivating a capacity to allow distressing feelings, thoughts and sensations to occupy awareness, without trying to change them, replace them with other thoughts, or fix anything about them. With encouragement and skillful means to interrupt the mind’s habitual patterns contributing to depression and anxiety, participants can cultivate practices to manage and prevent chronic feelings of unhappiness. This daylong retreat is appropriate for those new to meditation or those wishing to deepen their practice, individuals and health care professionals alike. People of all ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, and gender identities are welcome. Event will be held at: First Unitarian Universalist Church, San Francisco 1187 Franklin (between Geary and O'Farrell)
